Bengolnet Completes K4bn Internet Fiber Project
Expectations are high that internet costs will drop and speeds will improve following the completion of a fibre internet project by Bengol.Net, pulling connectivity from the Indian Ocean in Mozambique.
In a press briefing, Managing Director Mohammad Abdullah announced the company’s K4bn investment to boost Malawi’s social and economic development through enhanced fibre connection.
“Our approach offers unlimited 24-hour service. Customers won’t be charged for gigabytes; it’s a flat fee,” Abdullah stated, highlighting their competitive edge in the market.
MACRA’s Director of Telecommunications, Henry Silika, praised the achievement, stating it will lead to lower internet costs and higher quality services for consumers.

Bengolnet Faces Setbacks in Digital Malawi Project Delivery
BengolNet is facing challenges in delivering rural internet connectivity as part of the US$74 million World Bank-funded Digital Malawi Project due to ongoing court battles.
Managing Director Mohammad Zafar Abdullah informed the Parliamentary Committee on Media, Information and Communications that acquiring old infrastructure from Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) has delayed the project timeline, stretching it from four to ten years.
The legal case, involving Press Corporation, has been pending since 2022, stalling progress on the project.
Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee, Susan Dossi, has promised to explore advocacy options for resolving the issue.
